I don't follow football much as I'm not much of a fan of it, nor other sports particularly (except maybe boxing), but I'm aware of a couple recent incidents in which: (1) Someone blamed "God" for his poor performance, and: (2) Someone complained about and scolded the fans for "booing" his team.
This is the difference between wrestling and other forms of entertainment - Major league sports, movies, popular music, etc. It seems that in wrestling, going as far back as you want to go, the idea has always been "whatever works". That means - Whatever the audience will respond to.
Wrestling isn't about the ego trip of the performers. In fact, any ego trip the performers get comes directly from their ability to give the audience exactly what the audience wants. Any admiration wrestlers get is thus earned by directly connecting with the fan, rather than expected and demanded, as it seems to be in other fields.
Wrestling isn't about being "cool" or any of that BS either, and has always been available - to little kids, young adults, teenagers, and old folks; anyone who finds something in it to respond to. That's why wrestling has always sustained and always will - Because wrestling appreciates The People.
Thank God for wrestling in hard times.
